Allens Caravans

Holidays are meant to be relaxing – a destination where you can unwind and forget about the trials and tribulations of everyday life. What better way to do just that than to take a nice, quiet spot next to a lake, unpack your fishing gear and watch the world go by?

Here at Allens Caravans, our guests can do just that when they choose any of our caravan sites with fishing lakes. Some of our holiday parks with fishing facilities are:

We encourage all our guests, young and old, to sample fishing, regardless of whether you are a seasoned angler or you don’t know the difference between pole and rod. Fishing is an activity for those looking to de-stress, kick back and take it easy, or, in the name of healthy competition, catch the biggest fish!

Sea Fishing at Sunbeach

If traditional river fishing isn’t for you, then why not take a trip to our popular Sunbeach site for your caravan fishing holidays? Here, you can throw your lines into the Cardigan Bay from our Mid Wales Park, which makes for a spectacular setting in the summer. Some of the most common types of fish that can be caught here include all British isle sea fish.

Lake Fishing at Overstone Lakes

Overstone Lakes houses superb coarse fishing, which is sure to see many take part throughout August as it is National Fishing Month. Whether you come with friends or family, Overstone Lakes has something to offer for everyone. So, while the fishermen head off to the lake with their rods and bait, everyone else can enjoy the onsite facilities, including the social club, children’s play area and other activities.

River Avon Fishing at Bredon View

At Bredon View, holiday park residents have exclusive access to private river fishing spots. This is the perfect countryside getaway in which keen fishermen can get in touch with nature and enjoy the tranquillity of fishing.

River Avon Fishing at Abbott’s Salford

Abbott’s Salford is another spot that promises great river fishing. In fact, the park has a stock pool, which the holiday park residents can fish in all day long. What’s more, the picturesque nature of the mid Avon in Warwickshire makes for a truly stunning fishing location.

Fishing Tips and Tricks

Best Fishing Times

As always, fishing is a game of patience and perseverance. Along with those two virtues, though, it is also a game of timing. Experienced anglers will know the best times and conditions, but some of you might need a bit of advice or even a bit of a refresher. When you come to our fishing parks, you can fish at any time of the day, but there are specific times of day that could yield better results.

Spring

Early Morning

During spring, the mornings aren’t a great time to fish. The fish don’t bite because the water is so cold due to the low sun, which struggles to heat it up. However, the recent end to winter means that fish are in need of food, and they are spawning, so you might find that certain areas of water are a hive of activity.

Late Morning to Early Afternoon

As the water starts to warm up a little, fish begin to bite a little more. You should make the most of the spring breezes, though, and fish downwind of the shoreline, as this is where the wind will push the warmer water, and with the warmer water comes the fish.

Early Evening

When early evening rolls around, the fish are ready to eat. The position of the sun means the water is warmer, so their metabolism is peaking, and they are wide awake and hungry. This means the water will be abuzz, and you have more chance of a catch. For the UK’s best fishing holiday experiences, then look no further than right here!

Summer

Early Morning to Late Afternoon

Between the dawn and mid-morning, you are in prime fishing time during the summer. The temperature is just right for the fish, but you will struggle to find hungry fish because they have plenty of naturally occurring shelter and food.

Late Morning to Early Afternoon

Fish like warm water, but not too warm. As the summer day goes on, your fishing potential peters off as the fish retreat to cooler (deeper) water. This is fine if you just want a lazy day by the lake or river, but it is not ideal if you want to make some good catches.

Early Evening

During summer, the early evening is a great time to fish, with plenty of activity in the water. From dusk until dark, with the cooler water, you will see plenty of fish. So, you can relax all day and still catch a spot of premier fishing before supper.

Points of Interest

Temperature

Hot days make for lazy fish, and slow days for anglers. Cold-blooded fish cannot adapt to exceptionally warm or exceptionally cold temperatures. They tend to retreat to quiet, more oxygenated corners and rest.

The middle of the day is generally too hot and too bright for fish. Early morning, just before and just after dawn, and early evening, around dusk, are prime fishing times. Mid-morning is best because the shallow water is likely to have warmed to the perfect temperature for your scaly friends.

Pay attention to the temperature because your bait, speed and strategy will depend on how hot or cold the water is.

Weather Conditions

Wind is a big deal when it comes to fishing, and everything from its speed to its direction will dictate your fishing experience. You will need to anticipate how you cast your rod, where the wind and subsequent current will blow the fish, and what fish will brave winds, and which will retreat.

Storms and changeable weather are things that affect fishing because fish are sensitive to weather and atmospheric conditions. Pre-cold front, fish are generally hungrier, but post-storm, fish are less keen.

If it is overcast or if there is light rain, your chances of catching something tend to improve. These conditions make the shallow water a more appealing place for fish, whilst rain on the surface of the water means fish can’t see you so easily. Make the most of these days.

Uncover Hot Spots

In the river, there are a few common hot spots that tend to hold quite a few fish. Ideally, you want to be looking for things like weeds in the river; these provide cover for fish, especially in a river that doesn’t have much weed growth.

Another river fishing hotspot is the islands. These can be found in most rivers around the UK. They provide a great opportunity to attract a cluster of different fish species; however, you should consider safety before diving too deep.

Polarised Glasses

If you are planning to become an expert in river fishing or even if you just want to improve your chances, polarised glasses are definitely the way to go. They will help you to locate fish that are swimming around the river, making them ideal for those who just want a quick fishing session. They will help save time searching for fishing hotspots and may help increase your chances of catching a big one!

Stop for a Chat

If you are going as a pair, group or even on your own, there is nothing stopping you from striking up a conversation with a few of the locals. Not only can you share your experiences, but you can also provide each other with advice, tips, and tricks on fishing in general! (They may even point out some of the best spots).

Don’t Give Up After One Trip

Have you already tried your hand at fishing but failed to catch a single thing? If so, then keep plugging away, or try somewhere different. No two fishing holidays are the same, and like anything else, fishing is a skill that develops over time. It isn’t uncommon for newbies not to catch anything on their first attempt because you could be doing it all wrong.

Fishing is a waiting game that, admittedly, is not for everyone. This is why fishing is often described as the perfect relaxing activity, as it allows for plenty of time to kick back and relax. It could be the case that the bait you are offering simply isn’t attracting the interest of the fish, or you may be scaring them away for any number of reasons.

Besides, it’s not really about catching fish, is it? Whether it is a chance to catch up with friends and family or the opportunity to be alone with your thoughts, the perfect fishing holiday will leave you feeling relaxed and ready to attack the week head-on when you return home. That’s if you do find yourself leaving our humble little sanctuary, of course.

Enjoy Yourself

There is nothing worse than coming back from a trip feeling stressed out and tired, so try to enjoy yourself. Even if you don’t get a nibble one day, soak up the mild autumn weather and try again the next day! You can also make the most of your trip by – again – striking up a conversation with fellow fishers and remembering that you are living the dream.
