The Full English Breakfast
Traditionally, the full English breakfast is comprised of sausages, bacon, eggs, baked beans, fried mushrooms, fried tomatoes, black pudding, and toast. Despite this, you may encounter regional differences depending on where you are in Britain. These differences can spark rather harsh debate, but we say it’s your English Breakfast Day, so enjoy it however you wish!
The full English can be traced all the way back to the early 14th Century, in which the English gentry regularly enjoyed breakfast feasts as a marker of their wealth. Once the era of Queen Victoria rolled around, the gentry was in decline as a social class, and the wealthy class of businessmen, industrialists, and merchants became more prominent. This new class of people saw the gentry as the social model to aspire towards, which led to them adopting many of their customs, including the full English breakfast.
Following the Victorian era, the Edwardian era is regarded as the golden age of long leisurely breakfasts. It was also during this time that the full English as we know it today was being served as a British staple, not just as a meal for the wealthy. After this increase in accessibility, the full English was soon flipped on its head to become the meal of the working class in the 1950s.
Today, the traditional fry-up is enjoyed by the full spectrum of British society.
The Full English Breakfast Breakdown
Sausages – The preferred choices for sausages on a full English are either Cumberland or Lincolnshire sausages and, of course, these are typically fried.
Bacon – When it comes to a fry-up, you’re usually looking for smoked back bacon rather than streaky bacon, meaning that it isn’t necessarily very crispy. Again, it’s usually fried.
Eggs – Traditionally, eggs on an English breakfast are fried to the point that the white is firm, and the yolk is runny.
Baked Beans – What’s a fry-up without baked beans? Well, it isn’t really a fry-up at all. Before the microwave became commonplace, baked beans were cooked on the hob; however, we now have microwaves to make our lives a whole lot easier.
Mushrooms – Some people love them, others hate them, but the point is, you can’t have a complete English breakfast without fried mushrooms, nicely browned and caramelised.
Tomatoes – Fried tomatoes are another addition to a fry-up that can’t be missed, just cooked enough so that they’re soft, juicy, and blackened.
Black Pudding – Another staple that is either loved or hated is black pudding, otherwise known as a blood sausage. This too is fried.
Toast – Last but not least is toast! Slathered in melted butter and dipped in bean juice.
